Last year I was keen to get a fresh SCUBA set for myself, and a friend of mine couldn’t stop talking about his Excursion BCD. My first thoughts were, I do need a versatile, durable and comfortable BCD and looking at the Excursion I could tell it would be all those things. But I was not quite convinced yet, as I had had many “winged” BCDs before and they are great for flying underwater and tech work, but not so great on the surface side of things. As an instructor, my gear needs to perform in all sorts of dive activities like teaching pool works, sea trials, or diving from coral reefs to shipwrecks and deep dive on a dam. Sometimes I carry pony bottles and extra gear. And, of course, it needed to be comfortable as I use it almost daily over the season.
I was tossing between two options: the new Atmos that looks great and it is a 3D bladder-type
of BCD, or the excursion. What to do?
So I had a chat with the guys at Oceanic and they did say the Excursion is their best selling BCD plus there was a brand new version available. That really got my attention. So I thought, you know
what, I will take the plunge and find out by myself what is so great about this “wings”. And if doesn’t work, I will just keep it for my tech things.
What a surprise! I took it for a dive and, as I expected, it was an awesome flying,
moreover, easy to control and much more comfortable than any previous wings I have
had (and I have had a few). The real test would come a couple of days later
with an open water course. Would I be able to do all the demonstrations and
surface work without it pushing my face into the water like most rear inflation BCDs do?
And ta-dah no worries! It behaved beautifully, I could do everything as if I was wearing a
normal jacket but in a well strapped hugging non-obtrusive package.
Boy, now I really understand what my friend was going on about. The Excursion is a Jack of
all trades, seems like it can do it all in a very comfortable manner.
I’m happy I took the chance and had a go!

The Excursion BCD is light, durable and most importantly comfortable to dive in, with correct weight placement this BCD allows for almost perfect trim positioning in the water reducing drag in the process and with the redeveloped wing being integrated into the harness this also creates less drag and improves performance. Overall a great upgrade from the previous models with all the trimmings.

The Oceanic Excursion is my go-to BCD of choice for recreational diving.
This Excursion BCD is a back inflation design which frees up clutter around the torso and helps to stabilize a diver underwater by moving the centre of buoyancy above your centre of gravity. This in turn serves to improve trim and increases streamlining due to the reduction of bulk in the design.
The 50lbs air cell which is of the donut design, tapers slightly towards the head, placing the bulk of lift around the hips where it is needed most. This taper also allows small amounts of air to be rolled into either side of the air cell and with practise this can be used to trim out minor weight differences on either side of the body, which is useful when carrying heavy camera gear or a pony bottle.
Also interesting is the use of BioFlex material in the bladder design, which is designed to stretch up to 30%. This allows for a massive lift capacity when needed but also means that the wing will shrink back down to be compact and streamlined underwater. Further aiding this is shock cord laced over the bladder to keep things svelte underwater and help in reducing the taco effect (when air causes the wing to float up and wrap around the tank).
The QLR (Quick Lock Release) integrated weight system can support up to 20lbs of weight and the fact that there is no buoyancy cell located under the weight pockets allows the pouches to slide in easily even when the BCD is fully inflated. There are also two non-dumpable zippered weight pouches on the cam band which can hold an additional 5lbs each and are situated higher up on the rig to allow for some weight distribution to aid in trimming out the rig.
The QLR system is one of the more logically designed release systems on the market today.There is no Velcro to wear out and no pinch clips that will break with regular use. The weight pouch release handles are also contoured with no catch points which minimises the chances of catching them while diving and having an inadvertent weight drop.
The body itself is constructed of Fadeless 1600 Denier Ballistic Nylon which can hold up to a tremendous amount of abuse, and even after around 500 hours of use in highly chlorinated pools, shows little sign of degrading. Oceanic has gone with a classy graphite colour scheme and has accented hi-visibility reflective strips on the shoulders.
D-rings are all welded stainless steel and provide ample clip off points for extra bits of kit (however I do miss the lower hip attachment point found on previous models which was useful for clipping off pony bottles and other bulky equipment). Comfort is second to none and there is ample padding found on the spine and shoulders along with rolled neoprene where the harness contacts the neck.
There is one zippered pocket on each side which are large enough to store essential dive equipment such as a surface marker buoy or spare mask strap but due to the streamlined ethos of the Excursion, these are designed to only carry the bare necessities. There is however a knife mount which will fit an Oceanic Spinner knife nicely.
All up the Excursion is my primary weapon when teaching or fun diving with a single tank. It combines the ease of use and creature comforts of a traditional jacket style BCD with the superior buoyancy characteristics and style of a back plate/harness setup.

In the last year I have changed to this bcd and I am very happy. This bcd is by far the most comfortable I have worn, the way it sits takes the weight off the back/shoulders which makes it so comfortable. I’m really impressed with the bcd, definitely can’t fault it.

I have dived in an Excursion BCD for many years and I love it!! They are the pinnacle of comfort, convenience and usability… I feel so comfortable above and below the water. I also teach a lot of students n different gear and find that this BCD improves their buoyancy soooo much. Cant say enough good things about it… PERFECTION!!
